These tables provide a breakdown of public library book loans nationally by broad subject category.

The tables for the years 1992/1993 – 1999/2000 are based on estimates for book loans nationally derived from loans data collected from PLR’s sample library authorities. But the tables take account only of loans of books registered for PLR (about 45%) of library loans and use categories devised by the PLR office.

Since 2001/2002 PLR has been using the book trade’s standard BIC (Book Industry Communications) subject categories. These tables are based on estimated national loans derived from ALL the book loans collected by the PLR office from its sample library authorities (not just from loans of books registered for PLR as in the past).
